If you're contemplating having an in-ground swimming pool installed in your backyard, it is important to know what to expect and the options available that can make your pool maintenance easy and inexpensive. Check out our photo diary to see the entire process first hand and read below for answers to your important questions.
What is is really going to cost?
A lot more than you bargained for! Click here to see what our project cost. Don't believe those ads you see for an in-ground swimming pool installed for $20,000! There are many expensive options that can double or triple this cost. Here you will find details about these options which include a salt-water system, spill-over spa, deck jets, custom bench seats, built-in automatic cover, heater, and an in-floor automatic cleaning system.
Plus, there are things you will need to consider. Do you need a fence? Check with your town zoning to find out what type of fence is required. If you already have a fence, make sure it meets the town's specifications. It may not be sufficient. Where will you put the pool equipment? You will need a level area for your pump, filter, and heater, and the necessary utilities to make them function. Will you use gas or propane to heat your pool? If you will be using gas, where will the gas line run? If you will be using propane, where will the tanks be buried? Get written estimates for the electrical and plumbing work that will be required before you sign that pool contract! What if there are excavation problems? Obstacles, such as hitting ledge or finding a sink hole, can add thousands of dollars to your pool project! Don't think it can't happen to you! Discuss the worst case scenerio with your pool contractor. What will be damaged during excavation? Since we have a small backyard, our existing patio, deck and landscaping had to be removed before excavation could begin. This was an additional cost and something we had to arrange on our own. Plus, we then incurred the cost of replacing those items. What else could go wrong? When we went to replace our deck, we found structural rot behind the flashing from the old deck. Upon further investigation, we found rot on all sides of our home. In order to repair the rot, we had to remove and replace the existing siding. This also led to replacing all of the windows and exterior doors since they were 20 years old.
It took two months to complete our pool installation that started on July 27, 2006. Since our pool was heated, we kept our pool open until November 5, 2006.
We couldn't wait to open our pool the following year. The pool company came on April 4, 2007 to open our pool. It took two days for the chemicals and filter to clean the water. We had our first swim of the year on April 6, 2007.
How much do chemicals costs?
Since we have a system that turns ordinary table salt into chlorine, we do not need any expense chemicals. Once or twice a season, we need to throw in a bag of salt. This runs just $40-$80 a season!
